The city we were in was actually Hachinohe, not Shichinohe. But you should come to Shichinohe some time; it has some really good pizza and handmade gelatto.

Wonderful pictures. I was particularly interested in the little notes in the trees. Was there a theme as to what people wrote on this notes, special wish, things they love about the place etc.? Thanks for sharing this magicial place with us.

Hey, most of the initial schools I’ll be going to will be fairly close ie biking distance; however, later on the schools I will be going to are driving distance. For example, one school I went to was around 1.5 hours away, so driving is a necessity. My plan is to start driving as soon as possible, to become comfortable with conditions here. One interesting thing about Japan is that the speed limits are lower ie on the hightway 60 km/hr is pretty much the maximum. In addition, yellow plate cars or K cars are extremely common. These cars are really efficient and don’t have nearly as strong engines, so they are easy to drive, but keep the speed and costs down. I’m planning on leasing a k car, this is definitely a good option for me as leasing covers insurance completely as well as some maintenance. The cost is around 150-200 dollars possibly including winter tires also so this sould be the way to go. I hope that answers your question. Take Care, Tony

It really does sound like a whirlwind! How far apart are the schools and what is the terrain like in the area, ie highway, side road etc.? I am interested in the type of information the speaker talked about regarding leasing a car. Hello from all at home.

We’re not actually eligible for JR Passes since we have working visas–it’s only for tourists.

Yeah it wouldn’t have gone well, gummy bears are the forbidden fruit of running. For the full marathon they had this gummy stand that caused some problems with the other runners.

Right on man. It’s tough sometimes, because when you go to Japan, or Korea you automatically possess the skill of speaking English and lots of people would rather learn English than teach Korean/Japanese. My solution is to to claim that I only speak French, this will probably end hilariously when they realize I’m an English teacher for the JET program… またね！

I completely agree… use as little english as you possibly can. That’s what i’m trying to do here in Korea… and so far, there are ups and downs. I’m sure in a small town in Aomori it should be a heck of a lot easier. がんばって！！！！

Yeah the same thing happened to me. They told me the temperature when I got off the plane and I was trying to figure it out in celsius.
